Dragon is the name most people think of when they think of dictation, and it earned that over about thirty years. It is also the hardest of these comparisons to write, because what Dragon is in 2026 takes some explaining. Here is what we could establish from first-party sources, and what we could not.

Where Dragon stands now

Microsoft bought Nuance, Dragon's maker, and the product line has been reshaped around healthcare since. Microsoft's own Dragon marketing now leads with Dragon Copilot, described as an AI clinical assistant for physicians, and the old nuance.com/dragon address redirects straight to Microsoft's health-solutions pages.

The desktop product has not disappeared. Dragon Professional v16 is still sold through the Nuance store, described as "optimized for Windows 11 and backwards-compatible to Windows 10", with a 30-day money-back guarantee and upgrade pricing from v15. What has gone is the affordable consumer edition; what is left is aimed at professionals, and at legal and medical firms in particular.

What we could not verify

Dragon Professional's price is not published on its product page, so we are not going to print a number for it. Second-hand figures are easy to find and all of them are somebody's blog. Check the Dragon Professional page for the current terms. The same goes for its language list and whether recognition runs on your machine or in the cloud — neither is stated on the pages we could read, so this comparison leaves both blank rather than guessing.

Where Dragon is the better choice

You work in law or medicine

Dragon sells editions built around legal and medical vocabulary, with the terminology, formatting conventions and workflow integrations those professions expect. Nothing else on this page comes close, Vito included. If you dictate case notes or clinical documentation for a living, this is the category Dragon still owns and it is not a close contest.

You want to buy something once and stop thinking about it

A perpetual licence has a shape that a lot of people prefer: one payment, no monthly bill, no balance to watch, no provider account. Vito's local route also has no recurring payment or provider account, though it asks you to maintain a free open-source app rather than buy a supported perpetual licence.

You need it inside a corporate environment

Dragon is a Microsoft product with volume licensing, support contracts and decades of institutional deployment behind it. Vito is a free tool on GitHub. For anything that has to pass procurement, that difference is the whole story.

You have used it for years and it works

Dragon's accuracy on a trained profile, after years of corrections, is genuinely hard to beat, and moving means starting that relationship over. If Dragon is working for you, "it still works" is a perfectly good reason to stay.

Dragon's desktop line has clearly not been Microsoft's focus since the acquisition; the attention has gone to the clinical products. Vito is young, which cuts both ways — expect the occasional bug — but development happens in public and you can see exactly what is being worked on.

You want modern AI tidying, not just accurate transcription

Dragon's strength has always been recognising words correctly. Vito assumes the words will be right and spends its effort on what comes after: removing the hesitations, restructuring rambled sentences, adding line breaks, turning "thumbs up" into 👍. Different eras of the same problem. And you choose which AI does that tidying — any OpenAI-compatible model, including a local one running on your own machine if you would rather it stayed there.

Ask the AI anything by voice

Dragon is a master of voice command-and-control — open apps, run macros, format by voice. What it does not do is answer you. Vito's Vito Assist adds exactly that: say "Vito, translate this to German", "Vito, what's the capital of France?" or "Vito, a synonym for 'important'" and the AI replies where you are typing. Different kind of command — Dragon drives your computer, Vito Assist drives an LLM — and for questions, translations and quick facts it is the one that answers.

It is quite good fun

A small thing, and we are not going to pretend it decides anything. Vito keeps count: words dictated, sentences cleaned up, hours of typing you did not have to do, a chart of your week. There are 50+ achievements to unlock along the way, some of them silly, several of them hidden.

It turns out to matter more than it sounds like it should. Dictating instead of typing is a habit you have to build, and the first week is the awkward part — seeing "1 h 38 m of typing saved" is a nudge to keep going that a blank window does not give you.
