Vito compared with the alternatives
Dictation is a crowded shelf. These pages put Vito next to eleven other tools — one page each — with their advantages first and in full, and every figure taken from the other tool's own pages.
Start with the table for the shape of the field, then read the page for whichever tool you were actually considering.
How these pages are written
- First-party claims only. Prices and features come from the maker's own pricing and documentation pages, and each page says when it was checked. Second-hand figures from comparison blogs are worthless — most of them are written by a third competitor.
- Their advantages go first, and in full. A comparison that only flatters its author convinces nobody and ages badly. Where a tool is simply better at something, the page says so.
- What could not be verified stays empty. Rows we could not confirm from a first-party source say so rather than being filled in with a guess. The Dragon page is largely that, and is written accordingly.

What a year of dictation costs
The price column mixes monthly fees, annual plans, one-off licences and usage costs, which makes it hard to compare. Here is the same field as one number per year — for someone who dictates about an hour a week, and for someone who dictates an hour every working day. An hour of speech is several thousand words, so the small weekly allowances of the subscriptions' free plans are used up well before the first column.
| An hour a week (~50 hours a year) | An hour every working day (~220 hours a year) | |
|---|---|---|
| Vito, local engines | €0 | €0 |
| Vito, typical cloud providers | about €8 | about €33 |
| Handy, VocaLinux, Voxtype, Windows voice typing | €0 | €0 |
| superwhisper | $0 with local models on macOS; Pro $84.99, or $249.99 once | $0 with local models on macOS; Pro $84.99, or $249.99 once |
| Willow | $0 on the lighter Basic model; Pro $144 | $0 on the lighter Basic model; Pro $144 |
| Aqua Voice | $96 | $96 |
| Wispr Flow | $144 | $144 |
| Typeless | $144, or $360 paid monthly | $144, or $360 paid monthly |
| Dragon | A one-off licence; no published price | A one-off licence; no published price |
Subscriptions at their annual price unless stated, for one person. Vito's cloud figure assumes about €0.15 per hour of speech, which is what typical providers charge; your own providers' rates decide the real number. Otter.ai is left out, because it is priced for meetings rather than dictation.
The pattern is the point. A subscription costs the same whether you dictate or not, so at an hour a week $144 a year works out at nearly three dollars per hour of dictation. Vito's cloud route costs about fifteen cents for that hour, and its local engines cost nothing at all. A subscription only gets close once you dictate several hours every single day — and by then you are paying for a service, a company and a phone app, which is a fair thing to want, as the pages themselves say.
Per year, for one person. Dollars and euros counted as equal.

When another tool is the better answer
Vito is not the right choice for everyone, and pretending otherwise would make these pages worthless. Cases where we would point you elsewhere:
- You want transcription and nothing else. Handy and Voxtype do one job — local speech to text — with less to configure, and AI cleanup only if you switch it on or wire it up yourself. If the tidying step is not something you want, they are simpler than Vito.
- You need specialist legal or medical vocabulary on Windows. That is Dragon's home ground, and it has editions built for it.
- You need meetings transcribed, with speakers separated. That is Otter.ai's job, not Vito's. Vito types where your cursor is; it does not join your calls.
- You want nothing to install. Windows voice typing is already on the machine, costs nothing and types straight into whatever app the cursor is in. Vito also runs in a browser with nothing to install, but there the text lands on the clipboard for you to paste. Win+H will not rewrite what you said, beyond an optional "fluid dictation" tidy-up in English on Copilot+ PCs, but it is there.
- You want a phone app and a company to email. The subscriptions — Wispr Flow, Typeless, Willow, Aqua Voice — offer both, and Willow states HIPAA compliance. Vito is an open-source desktop app (and a browser version that works on phones via the clipboard) with an issue tracker.
Missing a comparison?
If a tool you are weighing up is not here, ask for it on the issue tracker and it can be added — checked first-hand, like the rest.
