Vito vs Otter.ai
These two get compared a lot and they should not be. Otter sits in your meetings and writes them up afterwards. Vito types for you, live, wherever your cursor is. Both turn speech into text and that is where the similarity ends — so rather than picking a winner, this page is about telling which one you are actually looking for.

Where Otter.ai is the better choice
Anything involving a meeting
Otter joins Zoom, Teams and Google Meet, records, separates who said what, and produces notes and summaries afterwards. Its desktop apps for Mac and Windows can also record a meeting without sending a bot in, Slack huddles included. Vito does none of that and is not going to. If your problem is "I cannot take notes and participate at the same time", Otter solves it and Vito does not touch it.
Several people need the same transcript
Otter is built around shared, searchable, commentable transcripts with team plans and admin controls. Vito's history is a file on your own machine. Vito Sync can keep it the same on all your computers, through a folder your own sync app already syncs, but that is still one person's history rather than a shared workspace — a feature for one person and a limitation for a team.
You want it on your phone
Otter has iOS and Android apps, works in a browser, and now has desktop apps for Mac and Windows as well. Vito is a desktop application for Windows, macOS and Linux with no phone app. Its browser version does run on a phone or tablet, but there the text only lands on the clipboard and there is no hotkey. On a phone, Otter is the one built for it.
You need compliance paperwork
Otter sells business and enterprise plans, with SSO, SCIM and a HIPAA add-on on Enterprise. Vito has nothing of the kind to offer.
Where Vito is the better choice
You want local privacy and control over the finished text
Vito can install and manage two local engines: Parakeet in 25 languages, and Whistle, 18 MB in seven languages, with the text appearing live as you speak. Or it can use any local or remote OpenAI-compatible transcription endpoint. Cleanup can run on a local model too, with five built-in styles — including Business, Verbatim and Notes — or a prompt you write yourself.

You want to write, not to review
Otter gives you a transcript to read, copy from and tidy. Vito puts finished text straight into the email, the document, the chat box or the code comment you were already in, with the hesitations removed and the sentences mended. There is no copying step because there is nowhere to copy from.
Cost, if dictating is the daily job
Otter's free tier is 300 minutes a month — five hours, which for meetings is a couple of weeks and for dictation is not much. Past that it is $8.33 a month at best. Vito's five hours costs nothing with a local engine — Whistle or Parakeet in the app, Whistle in the browser. With a typical cloud provider it is about seventy-five cents — or still nothing, if you pair AssemblyAI's free starting credit with Groq's free tier, which needs no card at all.

You would rather not put your voice on somebody's platform
Otter is an account, a cloud archive of your recordings and a company holding them. That is inherent to what it does — shared meeting notes have to live somewhere — but it is a different posture from Vito, which has no account, keeps history on your machine, and can keep audio there too with a local engine, Whistle or Parakeet. If you choose remote transcription or cleanup, data goes only to the endpoints you configured; nothing is pooled on a Vito platform.
Ask the AI by voice, anywhere
Otter's AI chat answers questions about your meetings. Vito's Vito Assist answers anything, anywhere you type: "Vito, translate this to German", "Vito, what's the capital of France?", "Vito, a synonym for 'important'" — spoken mid-flow, no chat window to open. Different scope — Otter is about the meeting, Vito Assist is a voice command line for the whole desktop.
It is quite good fun
A small thing, and we are not going to pretend it decides anything. Vito keeps count on a dashboard you arrange yourself: words dictated, hours of typing you did not have to do, a chart of your week, a calendar of the last six months and a streak of days in a row — beat your record and the card celebrates. Vito himself, the logo with a face, chats along while you dictate. There are 50+ achievements to unlock along the way, some of them silly, several of them hidden.
It turns out to matter more than it sounds like it should. Dictating instead of typing is a habit you have to build, and the first week is the awkward part — seeing "1 h 38 m of typing saved" is a nudge to keep going that a blank window does not give you. If that sounds like a gimmick to you, ignore it entirely; nothing depends on it.
