You want a free tool, permanently

superwhisper's free tier does real dictation, does not expire, and needs no accounts anywhere. Vito can also run locally without accounts or usage fees: managed Parakeet for transcription plus a local OpenAI-compatible model for cleanup. superwhisper remains the simpler answer if its bundled local workflow and model catalogue are the deciding factors.

superwhisper covers macOS, Windows and iOS. Not Linux. Vito does, with a setup helper that detects missing system utilities and explains hotkey configuration per desktop environment.

You want cloud-grade accuracy on an ordinary machine

Local models are a real advantage and also a real trade. They want a capable GPU to be both fast and accurate; on an older or lighter laptop they run slowly or not at all, and they drain the battery while they work. superwhisper's free tier runs what they call small models, with the larger ones behind Pro.

superwhisper can do AI transformations through its custom "modes" — powerful, but you build and pick a mode for each kind of task. Vito's Vito Assist is looser: just say "Vito, translate this to German" or "Vito, what's the capital of France?" mid-dictation and it runs, no mode to define or choose first. And it uses the provider and model you set — your own key, a stronger model if you want it.

It is quite good fun

A small thing, and we are not going to pretend it decides anything. Vito keeps count: words dictated, sentences cleaned up, hours of typing you did not have to do, a chart of your week. There are 50+ achievements to unlock along the way, some of them silly, several of them hidden.

It turns out to matter more than it sounds like it should. Dictating instead of typing is a habit you have to build, and the first week is the awkward part — seeing "1 h 38 m of typing saved" is a nudge to keep going that a blank window does not give you. If that sounds like a gimmick to you, ignore it entirely; nothing depends on it.

What they both do

Hotkey anywhere on the system, talk, cleaned-up text appears where your cursor is. Both go well beyond a raw transcript — filler words removed, sentences mended, formatting applied. Both let you bring your own API keys, though for Vito that is the only mode and for superwhisper it is an option on Pro. Both keep a personal dictionary.
