Both can run recognition locally; superwhisper has a free tier that never expires and sells a lifetime licence, while Vito is open source, runs on Linux and in a browser, and manages two local engines itself — Parakeet and the much smaller Whistle. Where superwhisper is the better choice

You want a wide choice of local models

Working with no connection is no longer what separates these two: both can run the recognition on your own computer, so both keep going on a plane, on a train or in a building with bad wifi, with no audio leaving the machine. What superwhisper offers is choice. Its catalogue of local models is much broader, on macOS every local Whisper model is now free rather than only the small ones, and S1-mini, its on-device language model with tone control, can tidy the text without a connection too. Vito keeps it deliberately simple with two managed engines: Parakeet, 25 European languages in about 900 MB, with the text arriving once you stop; and Whistle, seven languages in 18 MB, with the text appearing live while you speak. Anything beyond those two means running your own OpenAI-compatible server and pointing Vito at it. If you enjoy trying models and picking your own, superwhisper is the better place to do it.

You want it on your phone too

superwhisper has apps for iOS and Android, and one Pro licence covers Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Vito has no phone app. Its browser version does work on a phone or tablet, but only through the clipboard and without a hotkey — fine for a quick note, not the same as a keyboard that listens. On a phone, superwhisper wins.

You want a free tool, permanently

superwhisper's free tier does real dictation and does not expire, and on macOS it now includes every local Whisper model, along with custom prompts and meeting recording. Vito is free as well and has no usage fees when it runs locally: Whistle or Parakeet for transcription, plus a local OpenAI-compatible model for cleanup if you want one — or open it in your browser with nothing to install. superwhisper remains the simpler answer if its bundled local workflow and model catalogue are the deciding factors.

You prefer a paid product with a lifetime licence

superwhisper offers a $249.99 lifetime licence alongside its subscription, with a 30-day refund. Vito itself is free and local use has no usage fee; choose superwhisper here for its packaged product and support experience, not because heavy use makes Vito dearer.

You would rather use one packaged product

superwhisper is one app from one company with one bill, and the option to plug in your own API keys if you want to. Vito requires no keys for local use, but it exposes more choices — local installation, endpoints and optional providers — that you may prefer not to configure.

You want Vito to manage local STT — or use your own endpoint

Vito installs and manages two local engines for private, zero-usage-cost transcription, so you never set a model up by hand: Parakeet in 25 languages, and Whistle, 18 MB in seven languages, with the text appearing live as you speak. It can also connect to any local or remote OpenAI-compatible STT endpoint, including Whisper and Parakeet. For cleanup, choose one of five built-in styles such as Business, Verbatim and Notes, or write your own prompt.

You are on Linux

superwhisper covers macOS, Windows, iOS and Android. Not Linux. Vito does, on X11 and Wayland, with a setup helper that detects missing system utilities, explains hotkey configuration per desktop environment, and gives you ready-to-copy bindings for compositors such as niri and Hyprland.

You want cloud-grade accuracy on an ordinary machine

Local models are a real advantage and also a real trade. The larger ones want a capable machine to be both fast and accurate; on an older or lighter laptop they run slowly, and they drain the battery while they work. superwhisper itself says Intel Macs work best with its cloud models, which come with Pro.

Vito lets you take either side of that trade. The heavy lifting can happen elsewhere, so an eight-year-old ThinkPad can use a cloud provider you pick, pay about fifteen cents an hour of speech and keep its processor free. Or stay local: Whistle is the light option, an 18 MB download, while Parakeet covers more languages at the cost of about 1 GB of memory and more CPU and battery.

Vito is open source, under the MIT licence. superwhisper does not publish its source, which is ordinary for commercial software and says nothing bad about them — it means the privacy claims are theirs to make and yours to trust, where with Vito you can check. Note the irony in both directions: their local-first design means less needs trusting in the first place.

You want no account at all

Vito has none. Nothing to sign up for, nothing to cancel, no licence tied to an identity.

Ask the AI by voice, with nothing to set up per command

superwhisper can do AI transformations through its custom "modes" — powerful, but you build and pick a mode for each kind of task. Vito's Vito Assist is looser: just say "Vito, translate this to German" or "Vito, what's the capital of France?" mid-dictation and it runs, no mode to define or choose first. And it uses the provider and model you set — your own key, a stronger model if you want it.

It is quite good fun

A small thing, and we are not going to pretend it decides anything. Vito keeps count on a dashboard you arrange yourself: words dictated, hours of typing you did not have to do, a chart of your week, a calendar of the last six months and a streak of days in a row — beat your record and the card celebrates. Vito himself, the logo with a face, chats along while you dictate. There are 50+ achievements to unlock along the way, some of them silly, several of them hidden.

It turns out to matter more than it sounds like it should. Dictating instead of typing is a habit you have to build, and the first week is the awkward part — seeing "1 h 38 m of typing saved" is a nudge to keep going that a blank window does not give you. If that sounds like a gimmick to you, ignore it entirely; nothing depends on it.

What they both do

Hotkey anywhere on the system, talk, cleaned-up text appears where your cursor is. Both go well beyond a raw transcript — filler words removed, sentences mended, formatting applied. Both work offline with local models. Both let you bring your own API keys if you want to — optional in Vito, a Pro feature in superwhisper — and neither makes you. Both keep a personal dictionary.
