Is Vito really free?
Yes. The app costs nothing and is open source. The only cost is the API usage you pay directly to your chosen provider — roughly €0.15 per hour of speech. No usage, no cost.
Do I need to be technical to set up an API key?
No — it's like signing up for any website: create an account with Soniox, AssemblyAI or Anthropic, copy the key they show you, and paste it into Vito's settings. Vito walks you through it, and there's a demo mode to try everything before you set up a key.
What happens to my voice recordings?
Your audio is sent only to the speech-to-text provider you configured, and the transcript to Anthropic for cleanup — nothing else, nowhere else. Vito itself contains no tracking or analytics, and your history stays on your own machine.
Why cloud speech-to-text instead of a local model?
Local models sound appealing, but they're demanding: for good speed and accuracy they really need a capable GPU. On older or lighter machines they run slowly — or not at all. And finding the right one is a quest of its own: which model is consistently accurate, and does it even support your language? By doing the heavy lifting in the cloud, Vito works equally well on any computer, keeps your CPU free while you dictate, and doesn't drain your laptop battery. The trade-off is a tiny usage cost (~€0.15 per hour) and audio being processed by your chosen provider.
Which platforms does Vito run on?
Windows and Linux today, macOS soon. On Linux, Vito even detects missing utilities and shows per-desktop-environment instructions for setting up your hotkey.
