• Screenshots — the app now ships three screenshots (the dashboard, the dictation history and the dictionary) with captions, so software centres show what Vito looks like before you install it. They're also a step towards a Flathub listing.

Nothing else changed; if you're already on 2026.10.5 there's no hurry to update.

A small fix for the Flatpak on niri.

🐧 Flatpak: no more pointless shortcut dialog on niri

• The GNOME "Add keyboard shortcuts" window no longer appears on niri — the AppImage already skipped it since 2026.10.3, but inside the Flatpak Vito couldn't see how your system routes its portals, so it still asked. It now reads that configuration read-only from your system (host-os:ro plus your own xdg-desktop-portal settings, no personal files), recognises GNOME's backend without GNOME Shell, and points you to the compositor bindings instead.
• GNOME keeps its portal hotkey — inside the sandbox GNOME Shell looks absent even when it runs, so the Flatpak now decides by the desktop name and keeps asking GNOME for the shortcut.

A release for the Flatpak, and a tidier interface on every screen size.

🐧 Flatpak: typing on niri, Hyprland and sway

• The Flatpak can type on compositors without a RemoteDesktop portal — on niri, Hyprland and sway the sandbox used to leave every dictation on the clipboard. One line in your compositor's startup now gives Vito a direct connection to it, and it types like the AppImage does. Settings → Linux shows the exact line for your desktop, and the warning bar points you there.
• Install with one command — flatpak install --user https://vinceecniv.github.io/Vito/vito.flatpakref now brings Flathub along for the runtime. Before, an install on a system with Flathub set up only system-wide (Fedora, for one) stopped with "requires the runtime org.freedesktop.Platform … which was not found".
• The browser can start the Flatpak again — the Flatpak now handles vito://, the link the installed web app uses to start Vito when it isn't running.

GNOME and KDE need none of this: there the Flatpak types through the portal, as before.

🖥️ Interface

• A sidebar that collapses to icons — collapse it by hand on wide screens; on a narrowing window it turns compact before the top bar takes over.
• Dialogs fit the screen — on tablets and phones, with a compact download window on phones.
• What's new is centred like every other dialog, and 320px phones no longer scroll sideways.
• Notifications line up with the cards on tablets and phones too.

All new texts are in all 60 languages.

A release for Linux desktops and for keyboards with AltGr — and the first one built entirely on GitHub.

🐧 Linux: hotkeys that tell the truth

• No more pointless shortcut dialog — on niri (and other desktops without GNOME Shell) with GNOME's portal behind it, Vito used to trigger GNOME's "register shortcut" window, which stored your choice and then never passed the key on. Vito now recognises that combination and doesn't ask. The settings page says plainly that your desktop can't pass shortcuts to apps, and shows how to bind them in your compositor instead.
• Bindings with your own keys — the niri and Hyprland examples on the settings page now use the hotkey you chose in Vito (e.g. Ctrl+Shift+D), ready to copy.
• Register again — on GNOME, KDE and other desktops where the shortcuts portal works, a new button asks your desktop for the shortcut again. Handy after you dismissed the dialog, or to pick different keys.
• Listed once in the app menu — Vito's menu entry named two main categories, so some menus showed it twice.

📦 Linux: the version where your tools look for it

• AppImage tools see the version — X-AppImage-Version in the AppImage, so AppImageLauncher, Gear Lever and friends show it even after you renamed the file to Vito.AppImage.
• Software centres show the right version — the AppStream data named 2026.7 for months; the AppImage and the Flatpak now carry the release they are.
• Updates through AppImageUpdate and Gear Lever — the AppImage now carries standard update information and a .zsync file is published with each release, so these tools can find and download updates (only the changed parts). Vito keeps updating itself as before.

⌨️ Windows: AltGr keyboards

• Ctrl + Alt + letter works as a hotkey on AltGr layouts — on layouts like US-International, Ctrl + Alt is AltGr and the browser reported a character instead of the combination, so the hotkey field refused it. It now reads the physical key.

🔧 Under the hood

• Every download is built on GitHub — the Windows installer, the AppImage and the macOS image are now built by GitHub Actions from the same scripts, with checksums filled in automatically.
• Dependency updates: the Anthropic SDK, SQLite and golang.org/x/sys.

🌍 Languages

The new Linux hotkey texts are in English and Dutch for now; the other languages follow in an interface update.

A round of polish on 2026.10.1: choosing a sync folder now works everywhere, Vito in the browser fits on a phone, and moving from the browser to the app takes your dashboard along.

🔄 Sync

• Picking a folder works on Windows — the folder window could open behind the browser, so "Other folder…" seemed to do nothing. It now always comes to the front.
• On Linux, your desktop's own folder window — GNOME, KDE and the Flatpak use the desktop's file chooser; zenity or kdialog otherwise.
• Browse… next to the path — pick the folder in a window, or type or paste the path, and confirm with Use this folder.

🚀 From the browser to the app

• Your dashboard comes along — the app can take the layout you had in the browser. It's ticked for you when the app still has its first layout.
• Clearer choice — the buttons now say Bring them along and Leave them. You use the app either way; this only decides whether your browser dictations come with you.
• Staying in the browser works again — Keep using the browser version left the dashboard empty until a reload.

📱 Vito in the browser, on a phone

• A layout that fits — the menu button sits at the edge, page titles keep their line, the search gets a row of its own.
• Settings shows only what the browser can do — the section menu no longer lists sections that need the app.
• An honest note — Vito is made for the computer; on a phone or tablet it works, but without a hotkey and only via the clipboard.
• No keyboard hints where there's no keyboard.

✨ Smaller things

• New default hotkey: Ctrl + Shift + D — Ctrl + Alt + Space is often taken already (Claude, among others). Your own hotkey stays as it is.
• **The tray menu says *Open Vito*** — that page is much more than settings.
• The welcome card tells you AI cleanup is off in the browser, with a link to switch it on.

Vito now lives in two places. Try it in your browser at vito.talk/app — nothing to install, no account — and when you want it in every program, the app picks up right where the browser left off. The app itself now keeps itself up to date, syncs between your computers through any folder you already sync, and gets a small speech model of its own.

🌐 Vito in your browser

Open vito.talk/app and start dictating.

• Speech recognition runs in your browser — Whistle, a small model (18 MB, downloaded once) that works offline afterwards. Fine for trying Vito; for the best results add a Soniox key or an OpenAI-compatible endpoint such as Groq, right there in the settings.
• AI cleanup and Vito Assist work with your own key (Groq, OpenAI, Anthropic), straight from the browser.
• The text lands on your clipboard; a hotkey of your choice works while the tab has focus, and the detached window works too.
• Your dictations stay in your browser — statistics, streaks, achievements and the dictionary included.
• On your first visit Vito asks which interface language and which spoken language you want, starting from your browser's own.

🚀 From the browser to the app

• A download button is always at hand; it opens a window with your system already chosen and what the app adds.
• After the download a banner walks you through installing — and finds the app by itself once it runs. Chrome and Edge ask once whether vito.talk may reach it.
• When it does, there's a little party 🎉 — and one click moves everything you dictated in the browser to the app. The app shows what came in and asks before taking it; doing it twice changes nothing.
• After the move, the browser version becomes the way into the app — Open Vito starts it if it isn't running — with a short note on ending up with a single Vito.

🔄 Sync between your computers

• Pick a folder your sync app already keeps in sync — Dropbox, OneDrive, Nextcloud, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Syncthing or a network share. Vito finds the usual ones, or opens your system's folder picker.
• Your dictations, statistics and costs, achievements, dictionary and own cleanup rules stay the same everywhere; deleting a dictation or starring it carries over too.
• No account and no Vito server: Vito only reads and writes files in a Vito Sync folder; your sync app moves them. Settings and API keys stay on each computer.

⬆️ Updates that take care of themselves

• The app installs new versions by itself once you haven't dictated for a few minutes — on Windows with the installer, the AppImage on Linux, the app bundle on macOS. Switch it off under Settings → General → Install updates automatically.
• The interface can be updated between releases: a signed update from vito.talk, checked before it is used, and only for the version it was made for.

🎙️ Whistle, a built-in speech model

• Whistle by Cactus Compute runs on your computer: free, offline, nothing leaves it, a download of 18 MB. Seven languages: English, Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Polish.
• Live text while you speak, cut at your pauses.
• Silence no longer turns into words — a stricter speech detector keeps the model from inventing a polite "Thank you." when nothing was said.

✨ Look and feel

• Centred on wide screens, with dialogs over the content instead of the middle of the window.
• Notifications line up with the cards on the page you're on.
• Settings tabs wrap at the width of the cards.
• An empty history now invites your first dictation.

🛠️ More dependable

• Characters every app can show — a non-breaking hyphen no longer turns into a box in Notepad.
• Settings saves no longer fail after a restart in the middle of loading, or with a dashboard layout saved.

The biggest Vito update yet. The Status page is now a Dashboard you arrange yourself, with new statistics, a streak to keep alive — and Vito himself, the logo come to life, chatting along while you dictate.

📊 A dashboard of your own

The Status page is now the Dashboard: one grid of cards you arrange the way you like.

• Drag cards around — press and hold a card, then drag it, the way icons move on a phone's home screen. The other cards make way as you pass them.
• Every card has a ⋯ menu — make it one, two or three cells wide, switch its background chart on or off, or hide it. Hidden cards come back from the eye button under the grid; Reset to default puts everything back.
• No holes — when a wide card doesn't fit at the end of a row, the next card that does fills the gap.
• Your layout travels with you — it is kept in Vito's own config as well as in the browser, so it survives a change of browser and goes along with a backup.
• Pick any period — today, yesterday, the last 7 days, 4 weeks, 3 months, a year, all time, or any from–to range in a calendar styled like the app. On a narrow window the picker shows the period in short form (4w, 3–9 Sep) instead of only its icon.
• Longer memory — the history now keeps 5,000 dictations, and never less than the last three months.
• A fresh layout for new users — tuned by hand on a real dashboard, starting with the live transcript.

📈 New statistics

• One words card instead of five. Sentences cleaned, activations, spoken time and saved typing time grew in lockstep with your words, so they now live inside the words card as four small figures — beside the number when the card is wide, the number alone when it's narrow. Choose which of the five is the big figure from the card's menu. Big counts are short: 35.8k.
• Speaking rate joins spoken time: 5h 5m · 117 wpm.
• How things moved — the main figures show the change against the previous period of the same length (▲ 12%), with the earlier figure and its dates in the tooltip.
• 🔥 Streak — the days in a row you dictated. Two days off in any seven are forgiven, so a weekend never breaks it, and today counts until it's over. Beat your record and the card celebrates — a glowing border, the number in gold, embers rising; come within three days of it and it warms up with a countdown. Switch the celebration off from its menu if you'd rather not.
• Calendar — the last 26 weeks as a heatmap, a square per day, next to the average words per dictation.
• Most used words — a word cloud of what you actually talk about, with short and common words left out.
• Languages — the share of each language you dictated in, from what the speech recognition detected.
• AI cleanup — how often the cleanup actually changed your text, and how often it failed.
• Costs — this month so far on the card; the period's cost, where the month is heading at the current pace, and the split per service in its tooltip. The currency is in the card's menu.
• Vito Assist appears only once you've used it, instead of showing 0.
• Empty states — cards without data say why. On Today, before your first dictation, the word cloud shows the logo's bars talking and a friendly line that changes from day to day, with your hotkey in it.

🎭 Meet Vito

The logo with a face — its triangle as the head, its seven bars as hair — lives on the dashboard and, if you like, in the detached window.

• He chats along while you dictate: his mouth follows your voice, his hair bounces like an equaliser, and his expression changes every few seconds. Pause and he tilts his head, listening. Talk for long and he starts to sweat.
• He reacts — thinking while your text is processed, happy when it lands, dizzy on an error, and asleep after a while without dictating.
• Between dictations he gets up to things: bouncing like a ball, eating a cookie, blowing bubbles, yawning, humming, singing, a rainbow party, crossing his eyes, rolling them — and a pirouette that shows the gears turning in his back.
• His eyes follow your pointer, his mouth opens when it comes near, and a click gets you a trick.
• He sits on the bottom bar of the detached window; switch him off there under Vito character.

✨ Look and feel

• Vito's own mouse pointers, in the style of Bibata Modern — a rounded dart and a hand with the logo's bars on its palm — throughout the app.
• Every tooltip in the app's own style, the detached window included — no more grey browser tooltips.
• Quick settings card with your hotkey, speech model, language, cleanup and rule set at a glance; the recording state moved onto the live transcript card.
• Recent dictations — a clock button on the live transcript card lists your last eight, each a click from the clipboard.
• Wait after stopping — point at a dictation's wait time for the period's median, slowest 5% and trend.
• Achievements earned today stand out for the rest of the day.
• Settings tabs stay in view while you scroll, and only fold into a dropdown when they'd need a third line.
• Page tabs in the top bar at medium window widths.
• Matrix rain on the version card when an update is out (switchable).
• The window title says Vito once instead of twice.

🛠️ More dependable

• A dropped connection no longer reloads the page. A laptop waking up or a frozen tab now just catches up; the page reloads only when Vito itself restarted. Opening the app as localhost no longer loops.
• The dashboard loads once where it used to load several times per dictation, and a slow answer can no longer overwrite the period you picked after it.
• Card menus work from the keyboard and stay visible on touchscreens.
• Language pickers show each language's own name again — Deutsch (German) — and find it when you search for it.
• AI cleanup's connection test now catches an endpoint that is missing /chat/completions.

🌍 The tray menu speaks your language

The tray icon's menu was always Dutch. It now follows the interface language you picked in Vito, or your system language when that is set to automatic.

The About page had two paragraphs that stayed English in every language — the privacy note about BYOK providers and the credits. Both are now translated in all 60 languages.

🐧 Linux: no more claiming a route that doesn't work

On desktops where the portal advertises RemoteDesktop without a backend behind it (niri, wlroots in a Flatpak), the settings page said text went through the RemoteDesktop portal before it had ever typed a character. It now says not used yet until a session has actually worked, and explains that Vito falls back to the clipboard if it doesn't.

Vito moves from AGPL-3.0-or-later to the MIT License, and pull requests are welcome — CONTRIBUTING.md explains how to get a change merged.

🎙️ Dictation without an account, on your own machine

Vito can now install and run a speech engine itself. Pick Vito local (Parakeet) in Settings → Speech recognition, press install once, and that is the whole setup: no provider account, no API key, no server of your own, and no audio leaving your computer.

Behind it is parakeet.cpp with NVIDIA's Parakeet TDT 0.6B v3 — 25 European languages, detected automatically. Vito downloads a pinned build and the model (≈ 900 MB, once), checks both against hashes baked into the release, and runs the engine as a background process only while you have that card selected.

Measured on a 12-core desktop:

It needs about 1 GB of RAM while it runs and 0.9 GB of disk. There is no live transcript — the text arrives when you stop speaking. Keyterms are not used by this engine; your corrections still are.

🔌 Or point Vito at any OpenAI-compatible endpoint

The other new provider takes a base URL and talks to whatever is behind it: whisper-server, Speaches, LocalAI on your own machine, or hosted Whisper at Groq and OpenAI.

Whisper always encodes 30 seconds of audio, so a short dictation costs the same as a long one. Where whisper.cpp may be listening, Vito now sizes the encoder window to the recording — that took a 13-second clip from 9.0 s to 4.1 s on CPU. It also finds whisper-server on its own /inference path, and joins whisper.cpp's segments back into one line instead of typing its newlines into your document.

✍️ Cleanup rules you can write yourself

The cleanup prompt is the biggest lever on what comes out, so it is yours now. Five built-in sets — Vito default, Verbatim, Business writing, Notes, Messages — are always in the list and read-only; start your own from any of them.

Only the rules are yours: Vito appends a fixed output contract to whichever set is active, so a rule set can change what cleanup does and can never make it paste commentary at your cursor.

New Thinking control alongside it, for endpoints that support reasoning_effort. Turning it off is the fix when a model spends thousands of tokens deliberating and returns nothing — raising the token budget never was.

🧾 Why a dictation came out unpolished

When the AI pass fails, the raw transcript is pasted and a toast disappears seconds later. The reason is now kept on the history entry, so you can still find out hours afterwards. The notification points you there instead of truncating a provider error into uselessness.

The out-of-credit card can be dismissed, and stays gone until that account actually runs dry again.

🎛️ The speech settings, rearranged

The page was one long list of every field of every provider. Each card now carries its own fold-out — open for the provider you use, closed for the rest — with the provider's logo and one line saying what it asks of you: an account somewhere, a server of your own, or nothing but a download.

🐛 Fixes

• A dropped streaming connection fell back to AssemblyAI's async API whatever provider you had chosen. A Soniox user without an AssemblyAI key simply lost the dictation.
• The silence watchdog and auto-stop read speech activity off the live transcript, which a batch provider never sends. They now fall back to the microphone level, so both work with the new providers.

⏰ Groq retires Vito's default model on 16 August 2026

If you use Groq for cleanup, update before that date. Groq decommissions llama-3.3-70b-versatile — the model Vito has shipped as its default — and llama-3.1-8b-instant alongside it. Left alone, your next dictation fails with a provider error.

The new default is openai/gpt-oss-120b, Groq's own mapping for the model being removed, so cleanup quality stays where it was. Existing configs migrate themselves on start: only those two exact model ids, and only against a groq.com endpoint — the same names on a local Ollama are still valid and are left alone.

The suggestion list is now the two models Groq designates production, plus two it flags preview. The preview ones carry a badge in the dropdown, because a model that can be withdrawn at short notice is exactly how this broke in the first place.

🐧 Linux: hotkeys and typing through XDG portals, and a Flatpak

Vito speaks the RemoteDesktop and GlobalShortcuts portals over D-Bus. On a Wayland desktop that means no ydotoold, no /dev/uinput udev rule and no root — you grant remote control once and it is remembered. A third backend, wtype, is preferred where it is available: it needs no daemon at all. ydotool remains the fallback for X11 and compositors without the portals, and an explicitly configured backend is always honoured.

Vito is now on Flathub-style hosting of its own: install from vinceecniv.github.io/Vito, signed with the repository key.

Which Linux download to pick:

Inside the sandbox a first dictation used to fail with ydotool not found in PATH — advice nobody could act on, since the sandbox has neither /dev/uinput nor a daemon, and the text then quietly went to the clipboard on every later attempt. Routes the sandbox cannot have are no longer offered, tried or named, and delivery falls back to the clipboard instead. A Flatpak on a desktop that cannot type now says so and points at the AppImage.

💸 OpenAI: current models, and a cost card that was wrong

The suggestions move to the GPT-5.6 family — luna for cleanup, terra for Assist, sol at the frontier. gpt-4o-mini stays in the list; it still works and is cheaper than luna.

The real fix is underneath: the cost card only ever knew gpt-4o-mini's price and showed it for every OpenAI model — off by 25× for anyone who picked the frontier model. Rates now follow the selected model.

🌍 Translations

The Linux and Flatpak strings, and the injection-backend labels that never reached the translator at all, are now in all 60 languages.

🍎 Vito now runs on macOS

Universal build (Apple Silicon and Intel), macOS 11 or newer. Vito lives in the menu bar, not the Dock.

Everything the other platforms do is there: global hotkeys with push-to-talk, paste/type/clipboard injection, notifications, launch at login, microphone level control and media ducking while you dictate.

The first launch takes a moment of ceremony. The build is signed, but with a self-issued certificate rather than an Apple Developer ID, and it is not notarised. Double-clicking a freshly downloaded copy shows "Vito cannot be opened": use right-click → Open, and if macOS still refuses — it does on recent versions — go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and press Open Anyway under the message about Vito. You only do this once.

Finder also shows a small ⌛ next to Vito's name. That is macOS reporting the app has not been through notarisation — not something still copying, and not something that approving the app clears. It is cosmetic; Vito runs perfectly well.

Then grant two permissions in System Settings → Privacy & Security:

🐛 Fixes for everyone

• The achievement chime never played, on any platform. The file's length fields were zero and the audio behind them was pure silence — playback reported success, so nothing ever surfaced it. Regenerated, and every embedded sound is now checked for actual signal.
• A failed AI cleanup is now audible. The "done" chime plays when recording stops, before cleanup runs, so a failed pass used to arrive as unpolished text with no signal at all. A distinct warning sound follows, and the notification says what happened.
• The welcome card, the privacy note and the cost note each listed only some of the providers Vito supports.

✨ Vito Assist — say "Vito, …" and it acts on your words

Start a dictation with "Vito, …" and a short instruction. It isn't typed out — it's carried out on your next dictation, or on the text already on your clipboard.

• Spoken commands — reshape your dictation ("translate to English", "summarise this", "turn into bullet points", "make it more formal"), or ask it something ("question" then ask, "reply to this"). The instruction runs through the AI-cleanup pass, the mic reopens on its own afterwards, and a unique sound confirms it's armed.
• Clipboard mode — "Vito, summarise the text on the clipboard" reads your clipboard and puts the result back on the clipboard, ready to paste — with a clear on-screen hint so it never feels like nothing happened.
• Live command banner with an animated Vito mark, in the app and the mini overlay.
• Its own (heavier) model, optional — borrow the AI-cleanup model, or point Vito Assist at a stronger one, since answering and transforming ask more than tidy-up does.

📊 Measured, and rewarded

• A dedicated "Vito Assist" status card counting how often you use it.
• A command achievement tier plus a hidden "Vito Wizard" for using all three modes — plain dictation, a spoken command and a clipboard command — with animated Noto medals.
• Honest cost split — Assist tokens are billed apart from cleanup, at their own model's rate. Both the AI-cleanup and Vito Assist settings now show editable token-rate fields, pre-filled from your provider (€0 on Groq's free tier), so you can match the exact price if you want.

AI cleanup: OpenAI-compatible providers

The AI cleanup pass now works with any OpenAI-compatible chat-completions endpoint, alongside Anthropic:

• Groq — a free tier (rate- and daily-token-limited) that states it doesn't train on your API data. Together with AssemblyAI's free starting credit, you can dictate and clean up for free.
• OpenAI — use your own OpenAI API key.
• Local model — point it at Ollama, LM Studio or any local endpoint, so your transcript never leaves your machine.

New installations default to the Groq preset; existing configurations keep their current provider.
